Stella Hanson-Carroll

A lifelong Edmond, Okla., resident, Stella Hanson-Carroll, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Sunday, Aug. 18, 2019, at the age of 105 years and 11 months. She was born Sept. 18, 1913, in Seward, Okla. She was one of seven children (four boys and three girls) born to William A. Gray and Viola Gray. She graduated from Edmond High School in 1932, married Earnest Hanson in 1939, and moved to a farm in the Deer Creek area. Stella and Earnest had one child, William (Billy) Hanson.
She went to work managing the Indian Trading Post at Frontier City sometime in the late 1960s. Earnest passed away in 1971, and in 1976, she married Arlis Carroll, who passed away in 1982.Stella worked other jobs before retiring at the age of 86. She was a lifelong member of The Christian Church and, before her eyesight got bad, read her Bible every morning after breakfast. Always head-strong and determined, she lived life her way.
At the age of 98, she fell and broke her hip. She told everyone she was going home because she "did not like to be here with all these old people." Ten months later she went home where she continued to drive, do wash (on Mondays), clean, dust and live independently until about a month before her death.
She was preceded in death by her parents, all her siblings, and her son.
She is survived by two grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and six great-great-grandchildren, along with several friends and loved ones who knew her as a kind, loving soul who was always thinking of others first.
A very special thank you to Cindy and Sharon for helping to care for her and allowing her to be at home, as she wanted, in the end.
A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2019, Gracelawn Cemetery under the direction of Matthews Funeral Home.

Stella was so kind and loving to all the children in the neighborhood. She was special to me she gave me a ride to get to work at Frontier City. It was always a joy to see her taking care of her roses.
