Raymond's Story

Raymond Hicks was born in Payne County, Okla. on the family farm, the youngest of five children of Crawford and Essa Hicks. He passed away at home on April 16, 2016 at the age of 82.
Raymond went to a one room school in Clarkson and Coyle and graduated from Crescent High School. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Central State College (now UCO). He was active in the Wesley Foundation during college where he met his future wife, Donna Frances Wheeler. They were married on October 28, 1955 in the First United Methodist Church of Edmond.
Raymond served in the U.S. Army from 1955 to August 1957 and then four years in the Reserves. He received his basic training at Fort Chaffee, Ark. and then went to the U.S. Naval Receiving Station in Washington D.C. While in Washington D.C., their daughter Essa Gayle was born at Boling Air Force Base. After completing active duty, they returned to Edmond. Their daughter Paula Jean was born in Oklahoma City.
Raymond worked at Republic Supply, Apco Oil, First National Bank & Trust Co., Penn Square Bank, Liberty National Bank and Bank One. He retired from Bank One in 2000. He was active in the American Rose Society as well as the Oklahoma Rose Society. He enjoyed growing and showing roses in various rose shows in Oklahoma and surrounding states. He also enjoyed judging rose shows and was a Consulting Rosarian. He had been the only charter member of the M I Hummel Club since April 1977.
Raymond enjoyed going to his First United Methodist Church Sunday School class, playing bridge, dancing with several dance groups, going to garage sales, and cooking and baking for friends and trying out new recipes.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Frances; daughter, Paula; his parents and three brothers and one sister.
Survivors include his daughter Essa of Springdale, Ark., grandson Mathew and his wife of Athol, Mass., grandchildren Axonna, Damien, Zoey and Mathew Jr., and numerous nieces and nephews.
A come-and-go visitation and reception will be from 6:30-8:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 19th at Crawford Family Funeral Service, Edmond.
A graveside committal service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 20th at Memorial Park Cemetery in Oklahoma City followed by a service celebrating Mr. Hicks' life at 1 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Edmond.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers contributions be made to Integris Hospice, First United Methodist Church or the charity of your choice.
