Nimrod Thomas Chapel Sr., 76, of Jefferson City, Mo. passed away Tuesday March 7, 2017 at the Harry S. Truman Memorial Veterans Hospital in Columbia, Mo. He was born in Silver City, Okla. on May 25, 1940 to the union of Joseph A. and Vera Thomas Chapel.
Nimrod was united in marriage to Cynthia Jewel Emery on May 1, 1969 in Wichita, Kan. and of this union was blessed with two children. Nimrod graduated from the historic Rock Hill School in Silver City. He enlisted in the United States Navy at age 17 and it was during this endeavor that he honorably served two tours in Vietnam before returning home in 1963. Nimrod was a very intelligent man who received degrees from both Oklahoma State University and Lincoln University. He was the first African American to receive a degree in the Construction Management field of study. Nimrod worked at Lincoln University for several years in the capacity of director of facilities. He went on to retire from the State of Missouri in 2007 where he was employed as a construction administrator for over ten years.
Nimrod dedicated countless hours to local charitable and benevolent organizations such as Boy Scouts of America, Habitat for Humanity and the NAACP. He was presented with a Veterans Service Award in early 2015 by Lieutenant Governor Peter Kinder in recognition of his selfless service to our country as well as voluntary work in the community. He was very influential in the NAACP in which he served as the president of the local chapter from 1998 until 2006.
He leaves to cherish his memories: a loving and devoted wife, Dr. Cynthia Emery Chapel; his son and daughter Nimrod "Rod" Chapel, Jr. (Denise), and Cynthia "Cie" Cochran (Myles); one brother Joseph A. Chapel Jr. (Ruth); two sisters Fannie Chapel Johnson (J.D.) and Gwendolyn Wilson; and five beloved grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his siblings: Elverso Chapel (Helen), Henrietta Chapel Harris (Jimmy), Catherine Chapel Ferguson (John), and Mannasah Chapel (Dorothy).
Friends will be received from 4 - 7 p.m. Thursday March 16, 2017 at Houser-Millard Funeral Directors.
The funeral service will be 11 a.m. Friday March 17, 2017 at Quinn Chapel AME Church with Rev. Charles Jackson officiating. Interment with full military honors will follow at Hawthorn Memorial Gardens.
