Nancy's Story

Nancy “Jane” (Roberts) Hellwege, 70, loving wife and mother, passed away at Bradford Village in Edmond, Okla., on December 16, 2015. Jane was born to Binum and Mildred (Ott) Roberts May 27, 1945 in Cushing, Okla. She made a career of one of her passions, early childhood education, teaching and then directing the Childhood Development Center at Southern Hills Christian Church in Edmond, Okla. for over 30 years and teaching at the University of Central Oklahoma, retiring in 2002. At CDC and at Southern Hills Christian Church, she was lovingly known by hundreds of CDC, Sunday School, and Cherub Choir children and their parents as “Ms. Jane.” Ms. Jane was known regionally as a captivating story-teller, and she was deeply passionate about child literacy and reading to children early and often. Her other passions included music, cooking, and grandchildren. She was a faithful member of the church choir and taught young children’s Sunday school classes and choirs for over thirty-five years. Mike and Jane Hellwege celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary May 30, 2014. Jane is preceded in death by her husband, Mike; her parents; her sister-in-law, Jean Roberts, and her daughter-in-law, Glenda “Gigi” Knowlton. She is survived by her sister, Tommie Cargill and husband, Darrell of Perry, Okla; her brother Joe Roberts and wife, Norene of Williams-burg, Mass., and her brother, Mike Roberts of St. Marys, Kan. She is also survived by her children, Darren Hellwege (and wife Bonnie) of Columbia, Mo., Roger Hellwege (and wife Elizabeth) of Edmond, Okla., and Mindy Hellwege (and fiancé Amber) of Oklahoma City, Okla.; and her grandchildren, Kristian Hellwege of Columbia, Mo., Janie Lavelock (and husband Jake) of Kansas City, Mo. and Grace, Miguel, and Aidan Hellwege of Edmond. Her grandchildren lovingly called her “Nana.” A memorial service for Jane will be 3 p.m. Sunday, December 20, 2015 at Southern Hills Christian Church, located at 3207 S. Boulevard, Edmond. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that gifts be given to one or both of these: SHCDC Scholarship Fund at 3207 S. Boulevard, Edmond, OK 73013 (please put on memo “Jane Hellwege Memorial Fund” – these gifts will be part of the Southern Hills Child Development Center scholarship fund Jane developed) or Southern Hills Christian Church at 3207 S.
