Marilyn's Story

Text size

Marilyn Bedell Fisher Wantland lived a full and vibrant life and she passed into the arms of her Savior, Jesus Christ on April 10, 2017 after a 40 year battle with cancer and yes she was courageous!
She was born February 8, 1931 to Roy and Mildred Fisher in Oklahoma City, Okla. She grew up in Edmond, Okla. and attended Randolph Macon College and graduated from the University of Oklahoma. She married the love of her life and childhood friend, David Glenn Wantland on June 12, 1953. Grammy had two things in her life that were the most important to her. First of all was her love and relationship with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. She gave her life to Christ in 1971 and has lived the abundant life ever since including being a servant leader through many occasions at her church. The other most important treasure in her life was being a daughter, wife, mom, aunt, grandmother, and great grandmother. We have so many great memories as a result of her desire to build a beautiful family. She was instrumental in creating a loving environment within our family that is still so noticeable today and we could always count on her love, support, and encouragement. When there was anything to do with our family, she was in the middle of it. Whether it was as a docent at the Cowboy Hall of Fame, the Theta Alumni group, her activities in PEO, a championship golfer, or in her church Bible studies in Norman, Tulsa, Edmond or Fredericksburg; she was all in. Her most important contribution was her leadership in creating the depth of relationships that we have as a family. Grammy and Pa spent most of their first 75 years in Oklahoma. In 2006 they partially moved to Fredericksburg, Texas and in 2014 they became full-time Hill Country residents. Grammy leaves many friends in both Oklahoma and Texas.
She is survived by her loving husband of 63 years, David Wantland and her three children, Robin (Diane) Wantland, Karen (Randy) McKenzie and Megan (John) Akin. She also was a loving grandmother to nine grandchildren. Lindsay (Adam) Zodrow, Katie (David) Volk, Millie (Garrett) Hicks, David C Wantland, Luke Mckenzie, Allie (Joe) Barvick, Coleman Akin, Annie (Travis) Jones and Jake Akin. She was also a blessing to her five great-grandchildren, Noah, Finn, Olive, Otto, and Sam. We are all so thankful of the blessing that she was to each of us.
We will honor her at a memorial service 11 a.m. Thursday, April 13, 2017 at Hill Country Church in Fredericksburg, Texas and a memorial service 11:30 a.m. Saturday, April 15, 2017 at First Presbyterian Church in Edmond.
In lieu of flowers, gifts may be directed in her honor to the Hill Country Church Building fund in Fredericksburg, Texas.
