Francis's Story

Text size

Our dad, Francis Eugene "Gene" Ray, passed away quietly in his sleep on the morning of April 5, 2017, at the age of 94.
Our Heavenly Father has welcomed him home as the true and faithful servant he always was for everyone blessed to know him.
Born in Sulphur Springs, Texas, as the eldest of four children, he took on the responsibility of being a man at the age of 12 due to his father's untimely death during the Great Depression. He worked hard his entire life, including picking cotton at an early age, shoeing horses with his blacksmith grandfather, and other difficult jobs to provide for his family. Despite his difficult early life, he worked his way through school and attended Texas A&M University. He was called to active duty and served in France with the Army Corps of Engineers during the WWII recovery effort and returned to finish his degree in accounting after his military service.
After moving to Tulsa to take a job as a tax accountant with the Warren Petroleum Co., he met Katherine Elizabeth Kelley, and the two were married at Holy Family Catholic Church in Tulsa, Okla. in October of 1950. While working and raising a family, he received his juris doctorate from the University of Tulsa Law School, attending night school. He also was a certified public accountant.
He and Katherine were married 62 years until her passing in 2012. Together they raised 10 children: Laurie Ann of Kansas City, Mo., Patrick Joseph of College Station, Texas, Margaret Katherine Hughes of Noble, Okla., Mary Florence Moffett of Tulsa, Okla., Peter Gerard of Edmond, Okla., Francis Kelley of Edmond, Okla., Carol Jeanne Killgore (deceased 2013), Timothy David of Rock Hill, N.Y., Sarah Alice Niroumand of Boise, Idaho, and Elizabeth Sue Brandes of Tulsa, Okla.
He is survived by a sister, Billie Sue Ray, of Sulphur Springs, Texas, as well as nine of his children, 17 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren.
Gene taught by example, and was the hardest working man we've ever known. His loved ones are comforted to know his soul is free to once-again be the incredible strong spirit we knew and loved, and he's reunited in heaven with his wife Katherine, daughter Carol, and other loved ones gone before.
Services for Gene will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 8, 2017 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Edmond.
