Odus's Story

Text size

Odus William Rice was born August 26, 1936, in Decatur, Texas. He was the third child born to Joe Bailey Rice and Zora Stockton Rice. His older sisters were Leta Joyce (Rice) Marks and Jo Beth (Rice) Luttrell. The family lived in various locations including Chicago, where Joe Rice studied Theology at Moody Bible Institute, and other locations where Joe Rice pastored churches. Along the way, two other children were born to Joe and Zora. Wanda Sue Rice and John Norman Rice.
The family moved to Edmond, Okla. in 1949. Odus graduated from Edmond High School in 1954, then attended Central State College before transferring to Oklahoma A&M. After receiving his Bachelor's degree, he was hired to teach journalism and to direct public relations for Northern Oklahoma Junior College. After a few years, he was hired by Central State College to teach journalism. Along the way, he earned a Master's degree and a Doctor of Education degree from OSU. After teaching for several years, he became assistant academic dean for a number of years, before going back to teaching. At the time of his retirement in 1998, Odus was a Full Professor, and the longest serving member of the education faculty.
Odus married Juanita Allman in 1971, and they enjoyed a very happy marriage. Juanita had a son, James Allman from a previous marriage. Odus related to James as a father, rather than a step-father. After a long battle with lung cancer, Juanita died and went to Heaven.
In 2013, Odus and Carol Rudkin were married. They considered their marriage a gift from God.
Odus will be remembered for his Christian character, his close walk with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, his kindness, intelligence and wit!
Odus was preceded in death by his parents, two older sisters, Leta and Beth, and his first wife, Juanita.
He is survived by his wife, Carol; two stepsons, Kurt Rudkin and Quint Rudkin; a step-daughter, Whitney Rudkin; his son, James Allman; three grandchildren, Jill Tyson, James Allman, Jr. and Julie Hurlburt; eight great-grandchildren, Hannah Tyson, Sara Tyson, Gabriel Hurlburt, Miles Hurlburt, Natalie Hurlburt, Lucy Hurlburt, Asher Allman, and Asa Allman; his sister, Sue Flanagan; and his brother, John.
A memorial service will be 1 p.m. Monday, November 6, 2017 at Faith Bible Church, 600 N. Coltrane, Edmond. A reception at the church will follow.
