Laquita Ann Mc Donald was born June 18, 1955 and passed away July 22, 2016.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Herman and Irene Hawthorne of Marlow, Okla., and her brother Fletcher Hawthorne of Sacramento, Calif.
Laquita is survived by her husband Aaron McDonald and her two daughters, Jennifer Pletz and husband Kenneth and Julie Hemphill and husband Daniel all of Edmond, Okla.; three siblings, Keith Talley and wife Sherry of Arizona, Kenney Anderson and wife Nancy of Illinois, and LouAnne Trakarian of California, and two grandchildren, Gordon Pletz and Hudson Hemphill.
Laquita taught kindergarten for 16 years and pre-kindergarten for three years at Will Rogers Elementary in Edmond before retiring. It was often a joke among family that she had found her "peer group" in these young minds, because she enjoyed the silly singing and dancing just as much as they did. Everything she did in life she did wholeheartedly and full of joy and teaching and loving her kids was a daily example of that. It was not uncommon for past students to return year after year just to say hi, and many parents over the years acknowledged her devotion and the difference it made in their child's life.
Laquita had more than her share of medical challenges. Most notably was her brain tumor in 1993 that was initially pronounced as a death sentence from most doctors. Laquita never thought of giving up and as a result of her faith and her fight we were blessed with another 20 years with her. When it was discovered she had another brain tumor in 2015 again with a bleak diagnosis, she again never considered not fighting. Through every treatment, every struggle, every new physical disability she never lost her faith or her joy.
A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Friday, July 29 in the chapel of Edmond Church of Christ. Services are under the direction of Matthews Funeral Home, Edmond.
