Ketha's Story

Text size

Ketha Ann "MiMi" Welborn of Edmond, Okla., passed away in her home on May 5, 2016 at the age of 63, from a brief fight with cancer.
She was born in Muleshoe, Texas, on July 20, 1952 to Melvin "Red" and Lavern Simmons. She grew up in Muleshoe, and attended school there until her sophomore year in high school when her parents moved her to Pampa, Texas.
Ketha was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis at the young age of 13 and battled that terrible disease for the rest of her life. Doctors told her that she would more than likely be in a wheel chair while in her 20's, and would probably not live a full life. She proved everyone wrong and was able to not only walk, but able to finish cosmetology school and work until her mid 20's.
Ketha was referred to by many people as "Big Ketha" due to that iron will and matter of fact-ness in telling people exactly what was on her mind. This mentality allowed her to not only live a full life, but a life that she was proud of. A life that allowed her to do many of the things that she was told she would never be able to do. She will be remembered for her toughness, love of her family, and her ability to overcome insurmountable odds.
Her biggest joy was when her two sons married and gave her the grandchildren that she loved and adored so much. She would light up when she was around them, and they would always brighten her mood. She enjoyed the outdoors, gardening, watching Thunder basketball, playing games with her grandchildren, traveling when her health allowed her to, and mainly just the company of others that were willing to sit and talk with her. She will be missed dearly by her family and friends, but will forever be in our hearts.
Ketha is preceded in death by her father, Melvin Eugene "Red" Simmons and other beloved family and friends.
Ketha is survived by her husband of 46 memorable years, Nolan Welborn of the home; two sons, Brandon Welborn and wife, Noora of Edmond, and Brent Welborn and wife, Janey of Edmond; mother, Lavern Simmons of Houston, Texas, and sister, Barbara Sligh of Spring, Texas. She is also survived by seven beloved grandchildren: Chris Gonzales (22), Elida Perez (17), Alia Perez (16), Addison Welborn (9), Ketha Welborn (9), Ethan Welborn (7), and Mason Welborn (3); and many other aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. It is comforting to us to know that she has found peace in heaven and that she is finally pain free.
Visitation for Ketha will be 2 - 8 p.m. on Monday, May 9. Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Tuesday, May 10, at Baggerley Funeral Home, 930 S. Broadway, Edmond, OK.
