Kathryn's Story

Kathryn Kerr Kunc was born February 6, 1921, in McCloud, Okla., and died February 14, 2016 in Edmond, Okla. She fought to the last breath to stay with her daughter and fulfill the goal she had set for herself – to live past 100. She is survived by her daughter Brenda Brown-Canary Lawson and son-in-law, John, and three grandchildren, Gary Canary, David and wife Anita Canary, Helen Canary Grace. Kathryn also had six great grandchildren, Kyle, Jason, Cody, Lucas and Sophia Canary and John Robert Zimmerman. She enjoyed eight great-great grandchildren, Johnnie, Makenzie, Kylee, Lacie, Mason, Jaxon Canary and Porter and Scarlett Zimmerman. Kathryn also welcomed her first husband’s grandson, Shae Brown and his son Bryson Brown into her family. The University of Central Oklahoma occupied her whole life. She attended school in Old North Tower Kindergarten through college and taught at Central a total of 52 years. She served 15 years as head of the Art Department. She could not travel anywhere in the U.S. without former students coming up to her, most of the time she could call them by name. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday, February 19, at Matthews Funeral Home Chapel with burial to follow at Gracelawn Cemetery.
